I had a chance to have an interview with lettering artist Mark Caneso. It was truly a pleasure. Mark is an absolute beast at his craft, he carries himself with great professionalism. I’m hoping to do some collab with Mark soon. Keep inspiring greatness Mark.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Sure. My name is Mark Caneso. I’m 36 yrs old. I am currently living and working in Oregon. My wife and I moved here from Hawaii but I am originally from Southern California.

How you first got involved into lettering?
Lettering has been something I’ve always utilized in my graphic design. I got my degree from Otis College of Art and Design. I graduated in 2004. I’ve always had a strong association with letters in general as they are one of the main things I work with as a designer.

What are your influences/Inspirations?
Such an open-ended question. Recently, traveling has been a huge inspiration. New places, new people and new activities get the mind off in good places

How would (someone) describe your lettering style?
You’d have to ask someone. Ha. I try not to have a style or at least not rely too much on one. No one thing is the right solution for everything. So versatility is key.
When I’m working on pieces for myself I tend to gravitate towards the bold, fat and robust side of letters.

What do you do when you aren’t working on your not hand lettering?
Eating, drinking, designing type, exploring the new city we live in.

Is there anything new we can expect from you in the future?
I plan to continue to release new fonts as well as explore more physical object design

Two tips for hand lettering artist.
Negative space is just as important as positive space.
Put your own spin on things and don’t just replicate
